Digital Intern – Innovation Center at Research Park

About the Position

We are looking for passionate students from across campus energized by the idea of working in a fast paced, dynamic environment that fosters innovation and collaboration.

At Ameren’s Innovation Center, the Innovation Intern position supports challenging projects and conducts research in areas of advanced technology that contributes toward the Company’s strategic investment in forward-thinking initiatives. Interns gain valuable work experience in various aspects of technology research & development within a large Fortune 500 energy company.

The Innovation Center is comprised of groups of interdisciplinary (technical & non-technical) students working on projects in the areas of data analytics, application development, and emerging technology research. As an Innovation Intern, you will have the opportunity to support planning, execution, and completion of various initiatives.

Candidates have the potential to be placed in an internship position supporting one of the following:

Data focused intern:

You will use your analytical thinking to help solve real & exciting business problems by:

  • Wrangling, “munging”, and processing data from raw to read-to-use
  • Applying machine learning models and algorithms to real business problems
  • Using and improving your data science & analytics tool box (i.e, Python, R, Power BI, SQL, Excel, etc)
  • Acting as a data consultant to provide solutions to our business
  • Telling stories and delivering results via reports and presentations
  • Being able to thrive in a collaborative environment where you will learn from, teach, and mentor other team members on the above referenced items

App Dev focused intern:

  • Provide support developing applications using languages including but not limited to: Python, JavaScript, SQL, Java, C#, HTML, CSS, Angular, and have knowledge using SQL, PowerShell/Bash and more
  • Contribute to projects that may include web, mobile, cyber, IoT, AR/VR, and automation
  • Leverage UX/UI techniques to develop and design great experiences for the end users
  • Support team as a contributor in an Agile team

App Dev: Infrastructure Automation focused intern

  • Provide support to our Digital Technology & Operations Infrastructure Automation team, supporting and creating solutions such as:
    • Automating scripts for infrastructure processes
    • Creating dashboards and alerts for event monitoring
    • Building algorithms to predict failures

Innovation Operations focused intern:

  • The Innovation Operations team (iOPS) supports both the App Dev and Data teams through:
    • Project management
    • UI/UX
    • Operations support
    • Communications/Marketing
  • Champion storytelling by translating technical work to the business by creating and delivering reports and presentations of project work and results
  • Establish metrics and monitoring controls for projects/initiatives
  • Assist in the research and development of innovation explorations
  • Explore solutions and business cases for cutting edge and emerging technologies
  • Assist software/hardware development and support by creating requirements,
  • Provide technical assistance to developmental projects within Company segments
  • Work with Innovation Center project teams to develop project status reports and summaries
  • Employ continuous improvement methods to modify and streamline the process of innovation explorations
  • Mentor team members and provide guidance on the above-referenced items

The Innovation Intern works part-time or full-time in an office environment at the Research Park of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus, but may also need to work off-site dependent upon project needs. Terms will approximately coincide with Spring, Summer and Fall Semesters.

Qualifications

  • Registered as a full-time student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
  • Will consider undergrads and graduate students in, STEM paths, business, agriculture, and many other related majors based on experience and background
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 required and a 3.0 or above is preferred
  • Previous Intern/Co-op experience is preferred
