Boston Bioprocess (BBP) is a leading CRO/CDMO startup that provides a wide range of services to support the development, scale-up, and commercialization of fermentation-based ingredients. We are a VC-backed startup that offers a fast-paced work environment.

We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive Business Development Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with company leadership to help expand our customer base. The role will primarily be responsible for generating new leads, managing existing accounts, and providing exceptional customer service to our clients.

This is the first hire in this function for the company – the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with the founding team to build and execute a sales strategy.

We are a small, well-integrated team – this role will also involve cross-functional work in operations and strategy, supporting the overall growth and success of the company.

Job responsibilities

  • Identify and develop new sales opportunities through research, cold calling, email campaigns, and other methods.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients.
  • Provide excellent customer service, responding to client inquiries and resolving issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including marketing, technical, and operations, to ensure customer needs are met and projects are delivered on time.
  • Contribute to cross-functional projects in operations and strategy, working closely with colleagues to identify areas for improvement and implement solutions.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our products, services, and industry trends.
  • Attend industry events and conferences to network and promote our brand.
  • Utilize CRM software to track sales activities, manage leads, and provide accurate sales forecasts.
  • Meet or exceed sales targets on a regular basis.

Skills and proficiencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field, preferably biology, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a sales or startup growth role, preferably in the biotech or life sciences industry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and a passion for sales.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of CRM software, such as airtable, is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites and attend industry events.
  • Ability to thrive in a startup environment, including flexibility and willingness to take on new challenges and responsibilities as needed.

  • This role is in-person in Champaign, IL – candidates must be willing to relocate if necessary.
